Visitor Essentials
The southwest coast of Tongpan Islet features a marine abrasion platform, also known as a wave-cut platform or wave-eroded shelf. True to its name, this platform is formed by ocean waves continuously eroding sea cliffs, causing them to gradually recede and create a flat rock surface nearly level with the sea. Situated on this marine abrasion platform is a structure named the Lotus Pedestal. It is, in fact, the formation of an underwater volcano crater. Its perimeter is frequently eroded and depressed by seawater, leaving only a raised mound in the center. Viewed from a distance, it resembles a lotus pedestal, which inspired its name. Locals also call it the 'Lotus Platform'.
