Ziyun Temple is a renowned Level 3 historic site in the Chiayi area, situated at Bantianyan on the edge of the Alishan mountain range, approximately seventeen kilometers from Chiayi City. Among Taiwan's Buddhist temples, it is a relatively old historic site, founded in the 21st year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1682) during the Qing Dynasty, making it over 300 years old. Ziyun Temple faces southeast from the northwest. It is a temple complex featuring five bays, two main halls, two connecting corridors, and left and right wing-houses. In front, there is a spacious temple square. The left and right connecting corridors each house a two-story bell and drum tower. On the left and right main pillars of the first hall, inscriptions read: "Purple light peeks at forms, cloud shadows reflect the cicada's heart." The exterior eaves ornamentation is located on the front three bays. To the left and right of the central gate, there is a pair of stone-carved kirins looking back. The carvings at Ziyun Temple are extremely intricate and delicate; whether it's the dragon pillars, phoenix tails, or roof rafters, all the carvings are highly impressive. Among the gable walls, eight ancient steles remain, including the 1765 "Buddha Incense Lamp Stele" (erected by Zen Master Juefeng, clarifying the temple's property boundaries), the 1857 "Bantianyan Reconstruction Stele" (erected by Guo Zhuohai), the "Jiqing Hall Construction Record," and the "Bantianyan Buddha Stele." The inscriptions are still legible today. In front of the temple, there are two 200-year-old plum trees, affectionately known as "Mandarin Duck Plums." Several hectares of Paulownia and Tung trees are planted around the temple. During their flowering season, they form a vast white sea of blossoms, filling the air with fragrance and revitalizing the spirit.
