Koji pottery, an art form that integrates sculpting, painting, and firing techniques, is one of Taiwan's most revered traditional folk crafts. Known for its rich forms, magnificent colors, and auspicious, joyful ambiance, Koji pottery is widely used in the decoration of buildings and temples. The Chiayi region is recognized as the birthplace of Taiwanese Koji pottery, once referred to by the Japanese as 'Chiayi-yaki' (Chiayi ware). Mr. Xiao Wulong was born in Chiayi City in 1948. He was inspired by master micro-carver Mr. Lou Yongyu and, in 1980, became his apprentice to learn this ancient, nearly lost art. In 1993, he established the Xiao Wulong Koji Pottery Studio. Mr. Xiao Wulong is one of the few micro-carving experts in Taiwan. His works have received numerous accolades, including the Excellence Award in the Craft category at the 47th Provincial Art Exhibition and the Third Prize in the Sculpture category at the 4th National Folk Craft Awards. Today, his creations are highly esteemed and admired by experts both within Taiwan and internationally.
