Ruins of Dengyun Academy

Dengyun Academy was the only one of the four historical academies in Chiayi, Taiwan, located in Chiayi County; the other three were situated within Chiayi City. Aside from Dengyun Academy being rebuilt as Wenchang Elementary School, and Yupeng Academy (one of the four) being rebuilt as Zhen'an Temple to worship Baosheng Dadi, the other two academies have been completely destroyed. Dengyun Academy was first established in the 2nd year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1832 AD), originally named Dengyun Pavilion. It was not until the 15th year of the Daoguang reign (1835 AD) that it was renamed Dengyun Academy, adopting a more formal academy structure. The name "Dengyun" (登雲) was chosen to commemorate General Wang Delu, who contributed significantly and collaborated with local gentry to raise funds for the academy's establishment, symbolizing "smooth ascent to high positions." However, seventy years later, Dengyun Academy was flattened by two major earthquakes. It was not until more than fifty years later, in the 52nd year of the Republic (1963 AD), that the current Wenchang Elementary School was established on its ruins. Dengyun Academy fostered a flourishing cultural and educational atmosphere in Xingang, laying a rich foundation for education. It cultivated countless talents in its time, and this educational spirit continues to this day. Many even regard Dengyun Academy as one of the important factors for "community building" in Xingang, fostering a sense of cohesion. Regrettably, the only remaining artifact from Dengyun Academy is the "Donation Monument for the Newly Built Dengyun Academy," erected in the 15th year of the Daoguang reign. It was excavated from beneath the current Wenchang Elementary School's swimming pool during the original construction of the school and now stands in the right-side garden after entering the school gate, properly protected by a stainless steel and acrylic frame. The current Wenchang Elementary School inherits the objectives of the academy's education. Beyond its historical connection with Dengyun Academy, the second floor of a Chinese-style school building within its campus also serves as the site for the annual Confucius Ceremony in Chiayi County.
