Standing beside the tree-lined Zhongshan North Road in Taipei, an elegant white two-story Western-style building particularly catches the eye. It features symmetrical Greek-style columns and spacious verandas, exuding the dignified yet relaxed ambiance of American Southern colonial architecture. Historically, this building held a prominent diplomatic status, serving for a long time as the residence of U.S. Ambassadors to Taiwan, with notable figures such as Rankin, Leonard, and Kirk among its residents. However, with the shift in diplomatic relations in 1979, after the last ambassador departed Taiwan, this beautiful building was officially closed and fell into a long period of silence. This old mansion, left vacant for many years, finally saw a new turning point in 1997. It was designated a Grade III National Historic Monument by the Ministry of Interior, recognizing its historical and architectural value. The Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs decided to breathe new life into this space, commissioning the Taiwan Film Culture Association to manage it and revitalize it into an arts and cultural venue centered around film culture—"Taipei House." Today, "Taipei House" has become a sanctuary for arts and culture enthusiasts and film lovers. At the heart of the old mansion is "SPOT Cinema," a refined theater with only 88 seats, dedicated to screening art-house and independent films. The spaces within the mansion are also cleverly utilized: "SPOT. Red Balloon" is a film salon offering light meals; "SPOT. Coffee Time" is nestled beside an old tree in the garden, an excellent spot for enjoying a leisurely afternoon. The thirst for knowledge can be satisfied at "SPOT. Life" bookstore, which specializes in "film" and "city" themes. Additionally, the building's verandas are designated as art exhibition spaces, while the multi-functional arts and cultural hall provides venues for lectures and seminars, also housing a collection of film-related books for public reading. Taipei SPOT has successfully illuminated the city's film culture with a warm and beautiful glow.
