Taipei Tianhou Temple, commonly known as 'Ximending Mazu Temple,' is one of the three major temples of Manka (Wanhua) from Taiwan's Qing Dynasty era, alongside Manka Longshan Temple and Manka Zushi Temple. As you step through the temple gate, the bustling popular music and lively chatter that filled your ears instantly vanish, replaced by the lingering scent of sandalwood and an atmosphere of solemn tranquility. A distinctive feature of this temple is its 'Taiwanese and Japanese deities worshipped together,' a practice rarely seen anywhere else in Taiwan. The main hall is dedicated to the compassionate Mazu, the Heavenly Holy Mother, who protects travelers and merchants. The side hall, on the other hand, enshrines Kūkai (Kōbō-Daishi), the founder of Japanese Shingon Buddhism, which annually draws monks from Japan's Mount Koya to conduct special rituals, and also attracts countless Japanese tourists on pilgrimage. Additionally, the temple thoughtfully provides a small area with tables, chairs, and restrooms in the foyer, allowing visitors who are tired from shopping in Ximending or who need to use the facilities, to take a short break and freshen up. After paying respects, offering prayers, and enjoying a moment of respite, you might consider exploring the shops along Chengdu Road.
