Bangka Qingshui Temple

Qingshui Temple is located at the intersection of Kangding Road and Changsha Street. It primarily worships "Qingshui Zushi" (Patriarch Qingshui), hence it is also known as Qingshui Temple or Zushi Temple. In Taiwanese folklore, Qingshui Zushi is commonly referred to by various names such as Zushi Gong (Patriarch Lord), Black-Faced Zushi, Penglai Zushi, or Nose-Dropping Zushi. Qingshui Zushi was a person from the Northern Song dynasty, born in Fujian Province. His secular name varies in legends, including Chen Zhao, Chen Ying, and Chen Zhaoying. From a young age, he studied Buddhism and sought enlightenment. He once built a small hermitage in a cave on Mount Penglai for cultivation. Due to the clear and cold water in the cave, the hermitage was called Qingshui Yan (Clear Water Rock/Cave), which is the origin of the name "Qingshui Zushi." Legend has it that while Qingshui Zushi was practicing cultivation in Qingshui Yan, a demon used a great fire to smoke the patriarch, turning his face "completely black." Yet, the patriarch remained unharmed, which led to the name "Black-Faced Zushi." The name "Nose-Dropping Zushi" comes from a legend that whenever a disaster is about to occur near the Zushi Temple, the patriarch's nose would automatically fall off to warn residents and devotees. On the dragon and tiger walls of Qingshui Temple, brick carvings can be seen. The couplet on the main entrance reads: 'For Qingshui, for Penglai, this place divides the dharma realms; whether a golden body or an iron face, one sees the true form upon entering.' All of these are artistic works from the 1817 renovation. Additionally, regarding ancient plaques, there is one imperial plaque bestowed by Emperor Guangxu with the inscription 'Gong Zi Zheng Ji' (Meritorious Service in Salvation).
