Taipei Zhongshan Hall was formerly known as "Taipei Public Assembly Hall." Built in 1936, it was designed by Kaoru Ide, head of the Governor-General's Office's construction and repair division during the Japanese colonial period. Its overall design is grand and elegant, making it one of the few large-scale public buildings in Taiwan at the time. In 1945, after the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan and Taiwan's retrocession, it was renamed "Zhongshan Hall." In 1949, when the government relocated to Taiwan, Zhongshan Hall served as the meeting venue for the National Assembly and the Legislative Yuan. In 1969, it was transferred to the Taipei City Government, under the Department of Civil Affairs. In 1992, it was designated a national second-class historic site by the Ministry of the Interior; in 1995, following an amendment to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, it was reclassified as a municipal historic site under the jurisdiction of the Taipei City Government. In 1999, Zhongshan Hall was transferred to the Department of Cultural Affairs, where it remains to this day. Its Main Hall and Guangfu Hall have become major venues for performing arts in the city, hosting events such as the Taipei Traditional Arts Festival, Children's Art Festival, and Taipei Film Festival annually. In 2011, Zhongshan Hall underwent internal renovations, adding spaces such as exhibition rooms, the Taipei Academy, and an art and cultural salon. It was fully opened to the public, becoming a multi-functional venue in Taipei that integrates education, arts, culture, and leisure. In 2019, it was elevated to a national historic monument by the Ministry of Culture.
