Visitor Essentials

Geothermal Valley is located next to Beitou Hot Spring Park and is one of the sources of Beitou Hot Springs. Because it is perpetually shrouded in sulfuric mist, it evokes images of a terrifying hell, earning it the nicknames "Hell Valley" or "Ghost Lake." The hot springs here have the highest water temperature within the Datun Mountain volcanic group. The landscape, enveloped in sulfuric mist, is dreamlike and ethereal, resembling a fairyland, and was recognized as one of Taiwan's Twelve Scenic Spots during the Japanese colonial era. The rocks in Geothermal Valley contain the radioactive element "radium" and are called "Hokutolite." Among thousands of minerals worldwide, it is the only one named after a Taiwanese place. Currently, this mineral is found only in Beitou, Taiwan, and Tamagawa, Japan. In recent years, a Hokutolite conservation area has been established to protect and restore Hokutolite. Visitors here can not only experience the charm of a hot spring town but also gain a deeper understanding of this unique mineral. The spring water temperature in Geothermal Valley ranges from approximately 80℃ to 100℃. It is a hydrochloric acidic spring with highly corrosive properties, commonly known as "Green Sulfur Spring" or "Sulfur Water Head." In the past, tourists often used the high-temperature spring water in Geothermal Valley to boil "hot spring eggs." However, in recent years, to protect the quality of the hot spring water and prevent accidents caused by visitors falling, boiling eggs in Geothermal Valley has been prohibited. If you visit Geothermal Valley, please refrain from bringing food to avoid disappointment! Geothermal Valley has recently been renovated and reopened with a brand new look. A circular lakeside trail has been built, and hot spring experience facilities have been installed, including an iconic hand-bath (mineral hand spring) at the entrance and a large sloped "Love Seat." Visitors can stroll along the newly constructed lakeside trail, experience a natural steam spa, and enjoy the beautiful landscaping, revealing a fairyland-like new appearance.
