The statue of Emperor Wenchang at Wenchang Temple has its origins during the Japanese colonial period when a merchant from mainland China came to Taiwan for business, bringing the deity's statue with him. The merchant worshipped the deity daily in his temporary residence. However, after experiencing business failure and losing interest in religious worship, he temporarily placed the statue in a thicket. One evening, a woman accidentally discovered it but did not recognize the deity. She then gathered several enthusiastic locals to retrieve it. Among them, an old man identified it as Emperor Wenchang, the deity who presides over human academic and career achievements. Subsequently, a small temple was built in Lane 45, Minsheng West Road, to enshrine it. Since then, worshippers who come to pray have often had their wishes granted, especially those seeking academic or career success. This is the only important temple in the district dedicated to Emperor Wenchang, enjoying immense popularity. During examination seasons, many young students visit to pray for academic success, and their prayers are frequently answered. (Source: Wenchang Temple website)
