Ximending's name originated during the Japanese colonial era. At that time, most residents lived within Taipei City, and the area outside the West Gate served as their main recreational spot. In its early days, cinemas were the primary commercial activity here, followed by the gradual introduction of department stores and other entertainment venues. After the completion of Chunghwa Market in 1961, Ximending was once the nation's largest commercial and entertainment center. Ximending boasts many famous landmarks and shopping areas, such as the Instagram-worthy Rainbow Pedestrian Zone, the historic Red House with over a century of history, the iconic Wannian Commercial Building, and Ximending American Street, which is full of American style. A diverse array of cuisine also converges here, including Hong Kong-style dishes, Taiwanese dishes, American cuisine, beverages and frozen desserts, coffee shops, bars, and various other dining options. After a period of quietness in the 1990s (Republic Era 80s), Ximending transformed under the impetus of the MRT and government planning, becoming Taipei City's first pedestrian zone of significant importance. On holidays, the area is always bustling with crowds, filling the arcades and streets to overflowing. Whether it's food, utilities, clothing, or entertainment, you can find all sorts of trendy fashion and novel, interesting goods here, making it arguably Taipei's liveliest street. It is not only a hub for youth culture and street performances but also a popular spot for teenagers to dress up for dates. American Street, adjacent to Wuchang Street, is filled with American-style hip-hop fashion, unique accessories, and graffiti art, giving Taipei an exotic touch. Today, Ximending not only bears witness to history but also leads new-generation pop culture. Many nostalgic middle-aged and elderly people come here to reminisce, while fashionably dressed young people vie for attention. Two completely different lifestyles converge here, catering to diverse groups with varied needs.
