Visitor Essentials
The Tiaotong culture of Zhongshan North Road originated during the Japanese colonial period. The various Japanese snack bars and pubs in the neighborhood are popular among many Japanese expatriates and tourists, exuding an exotic charm that has continued since the Japanese colonial era, offering a palpable sense of its deep connection to Taiwan's history. To this day, Tiaotong still maintains a strong East Asian ambiance. Not only are there izakayas and Kaiseki restaurants, but also many Japanese home-style dishes such as Nikujaga (braised meat and potatoes), Oden (Japanese hot pot), Unagi Don (eel rice), Yakiniku (grilled meat), and other everyday meals, with the scent of old Tokyo drifting through the deep alleys. The blend of Taiwanese and Japanese cuisine here also reflects Taiwan's culinary culture from past to present; for example, Lane 7 (Qitiaotong) is the birthplace of Taiwan's Yakiniku culture.
