Fuxing Factory 1962, located in Taichung's Old City District, was formerly 'Shang Shan Tang,' Taiwan's first registered cosmetics manufacturer. This old factory, over sixty years old, has witnessed urban transformation and has now been revitalized to become a new hub for cultural creativity and lifestyle aesthetics. 【History of Shang Shan Tang】The story of Shang Shan Tang began in 1931 when Xu Qian, a Taichung citizen, founded 'Shang Shan Zhai,' specializing in 'Linsen' hair cream and facial cream. After the war, Shang Shan Zhai was approved by the Central Ministry of Economic Affairs and officially renamed 'Shang Shan Tang,' becoming Taiwan's first registered cosmetics manufacturer. In 1951, it obtained Taiwan's first trademark registration certificate, making it a pioneer in Taiwan's cosmetics industry. In 1953, the factory moved to Fuxing Road and continuously expanded its product line to include hair nourishing cream, perfume, and soap. In the 1960s, Shang Shan Tang collaborated with Tokyo Osaka Co., Ltd. from Japan, launching 'Naying Oily Facial Cream' and holding beauty demonstrations, injecting international elements into the brand. The 'Cherry Brown Sugar Soap' developed in 1962 swept across Taiwan, and its subsequent 'Shu Fu Lan' skincare series remains a well-known product today. In the 1970s, with business expansion, Shang Shan Tang moved to the Daqing Factory and a new location on Jianguo South Road, continuing to develop its brand market. 【Old Building Restoration and Cultural Regeneration】As Taichung's Old City District transformed and evolved, Shang Shan Tang's early production factory gradually faded from public view. However, as a symbol of Taiwan's cosmetics industry, its cultural value could not be ignored. In 2021, through the restoration efforts of the 'Qingzhu Design' team, this historic building was reborn as 'Fuxing Factory 1962,' and 'Fuxing Factory Culture Co., Ltd.' was established to continue its operations. The architectural restoration process focused on preserving its historical appearance, transforming the factory into a cultural exhibition space, and providing a platform for creative design and lifestyle aesthetic brands. The internal planning of Fuxing Factory combines cultural and creative, design, and educational functions, allowing visitors to experience the changes of the factory and the city, and appreciate the cultural value of the old building by showcasing Shang Shan Tang's historical artifacts and stories. 【The Contemporary Value of Fuxing Factory】After its magnificent transformation, Fuxing Factory received the 'German Red Dot Design Award' and the 'Japanese GOOD DESIGN AWARD' in 2023, and then the 'German iF Design Award' in 2024, winning three major global design awards. It has become a successful case of old house revitalization in Taichung, attracting numerous cultural and creative brands. This is not only a place for preserving Taiwan's industrial and cultural memory but also a stage where creativity, design, and aesthetics converge. Regularly held exhibitions and events attract participants of all ages, injecting new vitality into the Old City District. 【Future Development and Expectations】The rebirth of Fuxing Factory has not only evoked historical resonance but also brought positive impacts to Taichung's cultural regeneration and economic development. Bridging preservation and innovation, Fuxing Factory has connected the past with the future, becoming a new landmark for Taichung's lifestyle aesthetics and cultural creativity. Through the restoration and revitalization of this historic building, we can not only witness a segment of historical memory but also experience the enduring power of culture. Fuxing Factory tells a moving story of heritage, innovation, and regeneration through its own narrative.
