The Rinaj permanent housing settlement, situated at the border of Majia and Neipu Townships, has historically been a repository of profound cultural and historical narratives. It once served as a significant exchange point for goods between the Paiwan and Rukai tribes, fostering peaceful and symbiotic relationships among communities through this shared space. With the passage of time, this land transformed into the Majia Farm of Taiwan Sugar Corporation. However, after Typhoon Morakot struck in 2009, it was given a new purpose: to become a home for post-disaster reconstruction. The devastating impact of Typhoon Morakot compelled residents from Dashe Village in Sandimen Township, Majia Village in Majia Township, and Haocha Village in Wutai Township—all located in northern Pingtung—to seek new homes. With the support of government bodies and World Vision Taiwan, these tribal residents relocated to the Rinaj permanent housing settlement in December 2010, embarking on a new chapter in their lives. The name Rinaj, derived from the Paiwan language, means 'we walk together, everyone goes to that place together.' It symbolizes the courage of the tribal residents to rebuild after the typhoon and embodies the spirit of coexistence and shared prosperity among various ethnic groups. The Rinaj community comprises Paiwan and Rukai residents from three townships and three villages. This diverse cultural background has established Rinaj as a significant hub for cultural exchange and integration. The Dashe community, the birthplace of Sandimen Township, is a treasure trove of Paiwan craftsmanship, excelling in weaving, wood carving, embroidery, and pottery. Each piece of handicraft is imbued with deep cultural significance. Visitors can participate in hands-on workshops to personally experience the aesthetic principles of Paiwan life. The Haocha community, the birthplace of the Rukai people, maintains a close connection between its traditional culture and the natural environment. Residents pass down the essence of Rukai culture through generations via rituals, clothing, language, and handicrafts. Visitors can engage in local activities, dance with residents, sample traditional cuisine, and experience Rukai accommodation. The Majia community is renowned for its culinary culture and distinctive agricultural products. Specialties such as coffee and red plums are particularly popular among visitors. The culinary traditions of the Majia community also offer visitors insight into the indigenous people's wisdom of life. In the course of post-disaster reconstruction, the Pingtung County Government constructed four major workshops to foster Rinaj's tourism and craft industries, providing an important platform for tribal residents to showcase their handicrafts. In 2015, the inaugural 'Art Festival on the Slope' took place here, drawing artists and tourists and establishing Rinaj as a hub for artistic exchange. After 2015, the four major workshops merged and were rebranded as 'Rinaj lnl Original Space.' This venue not only showcases handicrafts but also serves as a conduit for cultural narratives. Through exhibitions and workshops, this space allows more people to learn about indigenous culture and helps tribal residents gain economic support through their creative endeavors. The story of the Rinaj community is not merely a successful case of post-disaster reconstruction but also a testament to cultural integration and coexistence. With wisdom and creativity, the tribal residents have transformed past traumas into hope, infusing this land with new life through art and culture. For every visitor, Rinaj is not just a tourist destination but also a journey of cultural exploration and spiritual growth. Here, every home, every piece of handicraft, and every culinary delight embodies the stories and emotions of the indigenous people, allowing visitors to deeply appreciate the depth and breadth of their culture.
