2026 Weiwuying Jazz Week

The allure and pursuit of jazz lie in its ability to transform the suffering and joy of diverse lands into an immediate, improvisational soul. Originating from the multicultural roots of New Orleans, jazz has, over a century, continuously intertwined with Latin rhythms, European classical music, and contemporary urban pulses, developing a highly inclusive artistic vocabulary. The 2026 Weiwuying Jazz Week, held from September 18th to 20th, will guide audiences to explore the profound "cultural imprints" and "contemporary dialogues" hidden within jazz through three distinct musical perspectives. MUSA Martin, a musician with both Argentine and Taiwanese backgrounds, leads the way, elevating Tango from a mere dance impression to a cultural confession. The performance encompasses Latin rhythms originating from African traditions, such as Milonga and Samba. This is not just a layering of musical styles but a journey to the roots, building a cultural bridge connecting the two lands within the theater through strong rhythms and live interaction. Barrio Hipódromo is the name of a neighborhood in La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, and also where MUSA Martin grew up. Contemporary trumpet king and ten-time Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, a protégé of the legendary master Dizzy Gillespie, embodies the belief that "jazz is freedom." He transforms the resilience of his early life, breaking out of Cuba, into a resounding trumpet call. This time, he will perform with a large nine-piece ensemble (Nonet), showcasing the pinnacle of his artistry spanning four octaves, fusing the heat of Cuban streets, classical subtlety, and rock's wildness into a masterful celebration of life. Saxophonist Ruby PAN will present "No Problem Girl" in Kaohsiung, returning to contemporary urban sensibilities. She uses the saxophone as a narrator, delicately portraying urban women's self-struggles and reconciliation within societal frameworks. Japanese saxophone queen Kaori Kobayashi is specially invited to join from abroad, showcasing the unique finesse and explosive power characteristic of Asian female jazz musicians. From the life rhythms of Latin roots and the resounding horn of a Cuban legend to the urban narratives of an Asian new voice, these three performances weave a diverse and profound musical map. In the evening breeze of September, come together to feel this improvised free spirit of contemporary humanity, transcending Latin roots and life's rhythms.
